#70DaysofCode - Why offer an "All Female Cohort?"

By Aide Morales - July 9, 2014 No Comments
Because Gregorio is with Fellows for the next 65 days from 9am until 7pm - I have the distinct honor of answering most of the incoming emails and phone calls about our upcoming sessions, to help new potential Sabio Fellows learn about our developer community, and answer any questions they may have about their job prospects once they finish our initial training program. It is great to get an opportunity to speak with 2 - 3 different individuals per day about code and how wonderful the world will be once they have this new in-demand skill set.
However, the one thing that still surprises me is the few number of women that I get to speak with on a daily basis. On average, only 10 - 20% of our inbound calls and emails are from females. In an effort to change this dynamic we started a very targeted marketing effort, with the help of the fantastic Sara Chica D to promote our All-Female Sabio Cohort that will be starting in October. We want to get the word out that we value the female perspective, and that we are looking for smart, energetic and motivated women that want to gain technical skills. Because I attended an all woman's college, I figured putting together an all female class may have the potential to create a place that is inviting to women that might be thinking about learning to code. I figure an all-female cohort might be the thing to tip the scales. Ironically, the female Sabio Fellows we have had thus far have done exceptionally well. It is our goal that with these examples more women will be motivated to join our developer community.
