A Letter to Future Sabio Fellows: Why You Need to do the Prework

By SaraChicaD - October 29, 2014 No Comments
Hello future Sabio Fellow, my name is Sara Inés Calderón and I'm a Fellow currently in Cohort #4. There are a few things I wanted to share with you about your prework, and how you can make life a little easier for yourself before you take the plunge into the world of technology.

First off, do all the prework. I know we are all busy -- I was working while I was doing the prework and I know how hard it can be to fit in all that extra time -- but trust me, it is totally worth it! The familiarity with these concepts and processes will save you a lot of time once you start coding. You won't have to learn about what you're doing while you're doing it.

Secondly, learn to Google things. If you don't understand something about the prework, Google it! What you will quickly learn is that developers like to share their knowledge and it will be easy to find lots of information online about what you need to know. The added benefit is you will start teaching yourself how to search for information on Google, so that by the time you need a quicker response, you can get to what you want in less time.

Finally, take the prework seriously and take notes. Notetaking by hand helps you remember things better than on a computer, or not at all, according to studies. Plus, especially the first few weeks, looking through those notes will help you get to where you want to be faster than if you didn't have them. I didn't take notes on CSS or HTML and regretted it for the first two weeks.

I hope you take these pieces of advice seriously, if you have any other questions feel free to reach out to me on Twitter, @SaraChicaD.
