Richard had a career in food science before he decided to #LearnToCode

Richard L. has a bachelor's degree in food science and technology from UC Davis. Before he decided to learn to code, he was working in the food industry as a QA Technician for a flavor company where he wasn't doing anything coding related. Feeling like he wasn't reaching his full potential professionally, Richard started to explore coding bootcamps.

"The info session really impressed me. I met Aaron, the instructor for the OC Sabio cohort. His personality and character inspired me to go to Sabio. Aaron has a mindset that anyone can learn how to code and that he will support his students to get where they need to be. He's very genuine," Richard said.

Attending Sabio in Orange County was a sacrifice for Richard because he lives in the Inland Empire. His daily commute was close to 100 miles per day. About a week before graduating from Sabio, Richard found a job as a web developer for the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), an association that develops plumbing and mechanical codes. Fortunately, this position is closer to where Richard lives, and he enjoys the work and is earning double his previous salary.

Richard recently graduated with Cohort 15, and he's been in his current web developer position for about four months.

"For me, Sabio is almost like an open door out of nowhere. For people who want to learn programming and want to work in technology, there aren't as many barriers as you would have trying to earn another degree. So attending bootcamp makes a lot of sense for someone who wants to make a career change quickly. Sabio really helped me turn my life around," Richard said.

Congrats Richard!
