After Sabio Coding Bootcamp, Alberto Scores Job as an App Developer for LA Dodgers
Originally from Los Angeles, Alberto didn’t know how he would end up in tech, but he always knew tech was his passion. Growing up, “I always thought I had to go down the legal field and become a lawyer because it was one of the careers presented as ‘successful’. Two of the options presented to me growing up were you are either going to be a doctor or lawyer because that was a way ‘out’, but I was always interested in technology — I just didn’t have any guidance on how to craft a path to a career in tech. My passion has always been people and technology, I love learning about how tech is advancing and the progress it is making around the world. Since there weren’t really a lot of folks around me with a tech background that could steer me in the right direction, I couldn’t see how I could craft a viable path to a career in technology. When I think back at what led me to Sabio, I thought it was my opportunity to solidify my skill set that I had developed on my own and accelerate my career in technology. The opportunity to fulfill a dream and work in an industry that I had a lifelong passion for is what ultimately led me to Sabio.”
Before Sabio however, Alberto checked out other programs, “I looked at a lot of others, but the number one reason I chose Sabio was the investment I saw from their team. From Liliana Monge (Sabio’s Co-Founder & CEO) to Gregorio Rojas (Sabio’s Co-Founder & CTO) to the instructors, you could really see the investment they were all making to ensure the success of the Fellows. I definitely did my homework around other programs and none of them had really as genuine of an approach. No one else said, ‘Hey we’re 100% determined to make sure that you’re successful..’ Everywhere else was kind of like, ‘You’re just going to be another person that joins our program and hopefully you’re successful.” At Sabio, I saw the drive for their Fellows’ success from the get go and even though I completed the program a while back, I maintain a great relationship with the entire team at Sabio.”
At Sabio, Alberto found his personal ethics helped a lot , “It really has to be a full on commitment, where you eat, sleep, and breathe code. In my career, I’ve grown accustomed to long hours and the personal commitment to be better everyday at what you do. Sabio will provide the platform for you to be successful, but the hustle and determination has to come from within. My cohort was very strong and had great guidance and leadership from the our instructor Brijesh. We started in-person at the Culver City campus and then unfortunately COVID-19hit and we all went remote. Regardless, Sabio did a great job of creating a culture where you can develop great relationships not just with the instructors but also with all of the cohort members. The experience at Sabio is reflective of the experience in the industry. Paired programming, project management, and technical communication are all part of the Sabio experience. Sabio creates a culture where aside from technical training you are able to develop professional relationships. I personally developed lifelong friendships with many cohort members and also with our project manager, Brijesh Patel. Even with everything being remote now, they still provided multiple opportunities to be able to engage with each other.”
Now an Application Developer with the LA Dodgers, Alberto felt fully prepared because of Sabio, “I did a lot of mock interviews with Sabio. They really push you to prepare and refine both your technical skills and communication skills. I can say with confidence that I felt extremely prepared after Sabio, especially with all of the alumni resources provided. There are a lot of similarities to the way the work environment is structured now as well, Sabio does a great job at creating a real-life work experience while in the program. From having conversations with other developers, managers, and communicating with non-technical stakeholders, is all part of the Sabio program. I think one of the greatest skillsets Sabio focuses on is how to ask questions. They train you on how to ask questions in a way that can best support your team. The Sabio curriculum is very much reflective of the real world.”
Even though he’s just getting started, Alberto is excited for the future, “I wake up every day excited to get to work,I can see myself here for very long time because it is the intersection of my passion for people, technology, and sports (not to mention I am life-long Dodger fan)..I’d love to take everything I’ve learned and identify opportunities to give back to my community. Access to meaningful computer science education, for all communities, is critical for the United States to continue to be a leader in technology. I commit to continue investing in opportunities to drive impact and ensure that my community is not just a consumer of technology, but also creators of technology. For those interested in Sabio, Alberto says, “The advice I would recommend is to commit. It’s really about if you’re willing to match Sabio’s investment in you by investing your time, energy, and focus into being the best engineer you can be. Sabio is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. They were able to take my skill set and accelerate it in a way that I never would have been able to do myself. I went from being mostly self-taught HTO developing a refined skill as a developer. The Sabio experience was transformational to say the least.”
