UCI and UCLA Coding Bootcamps Aren’t Nearly as Comprehensive as Sabio

At Sabio, fellows work on real projects for real entrepreneurs.

UCI and UCLA, via their Extension schools, have recently entered the coding bootcamp space. These programs don’t compare to the training that Sabio offers for a variety of reasons.

  1. UCI and UCLA are not reporting outcomes from their programs with Council on Integrity in Results Reporting (CIRR). This organization standardizes the definitions and curriculum objectives while providing a level of authenticity that is often hard to identity when researching online. For the bootcamps, CIRR has standardized the coding education system and pushes its bootcamps to be truthful in their advertising. There are 28 CIRR bootcamps, all of which semi-annually report clear “outcomes.” CIRR member schools further commit to having their outcome claims audited by an independent CPA firm. None of the CIRR member bootcamps come from Extension/Continuing education programs that are attached to colleges or universities. Essentially, UCI Continuing Education and UCLA Extension are trading on their name recognition as top ranked public universities, but this top ranking really has nothing to do with continuing education programs that are not taught by a third party (non-faculty), Trilogy.
  2. Sabio uses instructors who have a track record of professional experiences (usually over a decade) as a developer, whereas UCI and UCLA are using instructors from Trilogy Education Services (aka recent GA grads). Recently, we learned that some students that were IN THE BOOTCAMP, and not had yet graduated, were also serving as TAs. Trilogy doesn’t hire instructors who have been working as developers for very long. The Senior Vice President of Academics at Trilogy Education Services was only a Senior Developer for less than two years before becoming an adjunct instructor in coding and data science at Rutgers University, prior to his arrival at Trilogy. This is someone with less than five years of experience as an actual developer. That’s not the case at Sabio. Gregorio Rojas, Sabio’s CTO and Lead Instructor, has close to two decades of experience working for various companies as a software engineer, and he hires instructors with a similar background. Sabio’s instructors are close to industry, which helps in curriculum development and teaching in a way that will match the skills that employers look for with the content taught in class.
  3. Sabio is a family with a five year commitment to its fellows, UCI and UCLA Coding Bootcamps don’t make that kind of commitment to its students. There are a lot of things that the UCI and UCLA Extension programs offer in terms of courses and subjects. Because Sabio focuses exclusively on technology, it has focused on building community. UCI and UCLA’s Coding Bootcamps are one of dozens of programs offered through their Extension and Continuing Education divisions. Sure, you will be part of the UCI Continuing Education or UCLA Extension family, but it’s not as close or cohesive of a family that Sabio has cultivated with workshops, a commitment to its fellows for five years, and a job network where Sabio fellows recommend and promote each other for positions in the local Los Angeles and Orange County tech community.
  4. Sabio Fellows work on real projects for clients who have a real need for the technology, while UCI and UCLA Coding Bootcamps do not indicate that they doing this with their instruction. From the beginning, Sabio has worked to cultivate relationships with companies who have real technological needs so that its fellows can work on a real project that will be utilized, interacting with entrepreneurs and end users. For instance on UCI’s Coding Bootcamp website, it indicates that students will work on “comprehensive projects that bolster their portfolios”. What do those comprehensive projects entail and will they be used by actual entrepreneurs? Sabio doesn’t have students working on projects for show in a portfolio. Sabio fellows work on products that will be used by clients that they get to interact with.

Sabio is a boutique coding bootcamp. We are small, focused, immersive, and committed to our fellows. We’re confident that our instruction and program far exceed what is offered by UCI and UCLA’s coding programs.
